It has been five years since the horrific attack on September 11th 2001.

Many people died horrible deaths, many lost friends and relatives, and many came close to losing their loved ones. It was a tragedy that will not be forgotten easily. Should not be forgotten easily. There are days in humanity’s history that are decisive for whole generations. My generation is ‘fortunate’ to already have two such dates - Nov 9th 1989, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and Sept 11th 2001.Today, five years later, as memories get blurred and life moves on we often forget what actually happened on that day. We all say that the world changed, but do we really understand how it changed. One hears voices out there that begin to question things. Did we - America, Europe, the West - not bring this onto oursleves? Who and what failed in that fatal day? Can we fight the war on terror sucessfully? Some even begin to question that there are forces out there bent on destroying our democratic way of life, who want to mould our societies to their twisted visions of extremist oppression. And coming from a country which has effectively regained its independence 16 years ago and has struggled for more than a decade to establish a functioning democratic system I am very sensitive to such questioning. To question is healthy. In fact to be able to question and criticise - freely and openly - these are two of the pillars of our freedom. Two pillars that came under attack five years ago.We should not forget the hope that the fall of the Berlin Wall brought to millions of people around the world, as we should never forget the realision that 9/11 brought - namely, that we must protect and advance the G-d given freedom that we have and that millions in the world still strive for.

Let us today pay tribute to those who died on Sept 11th, but let us also pay tribute to the nameless victims of terrorism and hatered around the world.

“…and it might well happen to most of us dainty people that we were in the thick of the battle of Armageddon without being waware of anything more than the annoyance of a little explosive smoke and struggle on the ground immediately about us.” George Elliot - Daniel Deronda

I would be sorry for the tragic incident on 9/11 if it was an accident. Please, take a look at "Loose Change 2nd Edition" the movie. I think this movie as many others I watched in video.google.com (some of them lectures of university professors) make it clear enough it was a controlled demolition. What's your opinion on that as a person not a politic ?

I am afraid I don't buy the conspiracy theories. Sorry. What's more I was there less than 24 hrs before the attack and almost lost a very dear friend on 9/11. I guess I've seen of the videos you refer to - they are very unconvincing. A matter of personal opinion.

Thank you for your immediate reply. I'm pleasantly surprised. :)

I was not conviced before looking at the movies. I still don't believe everything in these movies. I watched a lecture (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=964034652002408586) at Utah Valley State College. Prof. Steven E Jones about the two collapsing towers. I'm a physicist and find his arguments reasonable and worth considering.

5. dosheva - a lot of people died every day!

The question is: how and why?
That, what we know, is not the truth! I think so.

6. nmladenov - The question is 'Why'

Thanks, anonimen, I'll be sure to look at that one in particular. Still, to me its pretty simple - remember that this was the second attack on the WTC, the first was a few years earlier and was foiled in time. Knowing the Middle East I can vouch that there are plenty of people there who want to destroy our way of life and impose their views. Clearly they are a minority and by no means do they represent the religion of Islam, but they are fanatic and life means nothing to them. They want to destroy us. Full stop.

I may be harsh but I have no pity for such people. I've seen them act and can tell you that there is nothing, absolutely nothing, which justifies the indiscriminate killing of civilians, as was the case on 9/11.

I agree with you. There's no place for fanatism in our world and I'm totally against any violence. However violence is against both our and their religions. "Fight fire with fire" is not the principle of Christiеnity (which Bush pretends to defend).

I still think revenge brought us to a much greater war than the one we were in before 9/11. However it is a great benefit for American military industry and interests in the Middle East. This makes me feel a bit suspicious about the answer of 'Why ?'. I'm just trying to take a look from the both sides and take a decision for myself.

Lighten up, dosheva! The truth is that you have the freedom to blog and criticize, while many your age don't have even the freedom to think and speak. If it were only money it would be simpler. Anyway, there is no universal truth. Lets agree on that!

Dear all, let's stick to the Bulgarian language after all as your English is not good enough for that discussion. It's full of mistakes that can make one sick. Thanks!
